One Game At A Time

Though I’m not from Minnesota (dontcha know?) or Detroit (pffffft*) I am more excited for the one-game playoff tonight than Steve Buscemi with a wood chipper.  There’s as much drama as a Gladiator (the Roman kind, not the American kind) match: two teams enter, only one will survive.**

What makes this game even more compelling, is that in a Terminator kind of way, the future is now.   Both franchises are depending on young pitchers to continue their fine form and catapault them into the post-season. Detroit will throw 20-year old Rick Porcello to the mound; he’ll try to bring his best stuff to the biggest stage (come with me if you want to live).   El Tigres will look to 27-year old Scott Baker for a win (do it naw).  Either way, the pitchers will make their marks.  For Baker, it’s just another game, but that’s OK because Porcello’s ready for his big moment.  Also the headline writers are on strike so Bartlett’s book of clichés is filling in.

So tonight, just play it one game at a time, you have nothing to lose.  May the best team win one for the Gipper.

Plenty of interesting reading while I’m getting all dolled up for the playoffs:

For instance, perhaps looking toward his new book The Curse of the Rally Monkey, Shaughnessy jinxes the Sox

Sean McAdam has five keys for the Sox

(My 5 Keys, you ask?: Victor Martinez, Josh Beckett’s back, Mike Lowell’s aches, Victor Martinez’s defense, Clay Buchholz leaving his strikeouts on the sheets.  See yesterday’s E-mail Banter.)

Speaking of Victor “No Nickname” Martinez, John Tomase’s finally jumping on his bandwagon

Did you know Victor Martinez has played well?  Did you know it’s a slow day for Sox writers?

Not to be that guy, but when I see the words “Heidi Watney” and “Getting Loose” I’m reading it.  And now, so are you.  You dog.

Celtics

Doc’s trying to walk the tightrope of preparing the oldish C’s for a long season.  (via celticsblog.com)

Also trying to find a place for Shelden Williams.  As much as I hate Duke, I’d love to see him rebound (yes, it’s kind of a pun).

ALSO: North Station Sports is giving away Larry Legend’s Autograph.
